Can Singing be a Hobby?

Hobby? You might be wondering if it is at all possible to keep singing as a hobby or if you should, it’s going to be hard if you get good at it but there might be something for you to consider.

Singing can definitely be a hobby. In some cases, it can bring more joy and comfort knowing that you do not have to provide for yourself financially from this endeavor and it allows you to look at it purely as a source of satisfaction. Music as a hobby has been known to be good for people in the long term.

Would you be satisfied? Would you be able to live with it? There is a landmine of questions and questions that need to be answered but asking the right ones are of equal importance.

Hobby? Really?

The first thing we have to define and come to terms with is, what is a hobby.

A hobby is essentially something you do for your own pleasure.

So, what separates it from not being a hobby?

When you start making money from it.

So, if you’ve always wanted to learn how to sing and want to learn at your own pace while being all relaxed about your progress and growth then sure, singing is a hobby.

So, singing as long as it is for your own fun and pleasure then it’s a hobby.

Maybe you never got to learn it as a kid and maybe you always wanted to, I would highly encourage you to take it up as something you’d like to know and learn.

If you can derive pleasure and value from learning something even if you’ll earn from it while maintaining your responsibilities then you should 100% pursue learning how to sing.

Who knows? Maybe you’ll find like-minded individuals who you can form a band with and even perform in a few places.

Profession Means Money

I don’t think there is going to be much debate on the fact that the profession is something we earn money from.

But just so we’re clear about what I am saying, you don’t have to be a professional to enjoy music in any way. Plus, the majority of people who enjoy and revel in having a music collection of any sort aren’t related professionally to the music industry at all.

But the flip side of things, I don’t believe there is an age limit for you when it comes to learning how to sing. So, in that context, there is no age limit for you to join the music industry either. If you so wished to do it you could.

If you’d like to join the music industry and I had to name one skill other than being able to sing it would be music production. You can get hired at the local studio and learn how to produce your own songs, which a lot of people are doing already.

Just my two cents.

How the Lines are Blurred

It would be wrong if I didn’t say this.

The lines between a profession and a hobby are blurred these days.

Because if you were to go online and look at websites that provide freelancing services you’ll see how many people are trying to earn a little bit on the side and many are doing freelancing work as a full-time job.

There’s a lot of work out there for people who are willing to do it.

The question remains, if you earn a little bit here and now from your hobby, what is it? A side hustle? A second profession?

The only definition you can have for a hobby that crosses over a little bit on the professional side is the one that you give it.

Free Yourself from Professional Burden

But if you plan to keep singing as something that you don’t wish to earn from then I would like to congratulate you on being free of the burden of becoming a full-time musician.

All you need to do is derive satisfaction for your own pleasure out of singing and music as a whole. And the best part is, who’s stopping you from doing anything crazy?

You can release your own songs and you can do whatever you want to.

You can pursue whatever you want by whatever degree you want to. Compared to professionals they have to be on their toes at all times and you don’t have to. The music industry is a highly dynamic industry. It can be quite stressful being in it.

Do What You Want

Before I let you go, I would like to say this, online courses are the way to go when it comes to learning how to sing and I have written an article just for that. You can read it here.

A few quite important articles that I have written are regarding how just 30 minutes of practice is enough, and how talent and your age don’t matter when you wish to learn singing.

But, best of all, I have curated high-end courses for you to choose from and you can start learning to sing right now. Don’t let the price deter you because they are perpetually yours to keep!

It’s More About You Than Anyone Else

And before you go, I would like to say this.

It’s more about you than anyone else.

If you want to learn how to sing and pursue music to see where it leads you then it’s your call. How you pursue it and by what degree of seriousness is also your call.

What singing needs to do for you is going to be a very individualistic answer. Maybe it’s just a feeling, maybe it’s something more concrete and something you’ve always wanted to do but it will always be your answer and the conviction you have toward your idea that will push you forward to learning it.

But do definitely learn how to sing because music is a gift and being knowledgeable about it allows you to express yourself in ways that you didn’t think were possible before.

Practice hard and well!
