Can You Get Better at Singing by Just Singing?

I wonder if I can run a marathon if I just ran every day without putting in deliberate effort and understanding my statistics of running.

You cannot get better at singing by just singing. There needs to be a foundation of daily practice, understanding of where you are, and how to perform techniques in order for you to bridge the gap between where you are and where you want to be.

But that’s enough talking, let’s read on ahead to understand how this works altogether.

It Would Be a Fluke

It would be a fluke because the key elements that are required to make you better at singing are missing.

You might think that doing something over and over again is going to get you good at it, it will, but to a point. After that, it won’t help. You would reach a plateau where you can no longer climb ahead and I see that a lot among amateurs rather than beginners.

It seems as if the moment you start seeing certain results that you are able to sing a little bit better or maybe twice as better than you were when you are a beginner, you come out of that whole idea that you can no longer become better.

And the only way to go ahead is to keep on repeating what you already have so that you can be a master of that. You would gain results but they will be highly marginal. Now let’s talk about what actually works.

The Only Way to Get Better

What actually works is deliberate practice. By deliberate practice I mean that you are aware of your practice sessions, you have set aside time and you know what you’re going to practice and you’re not going blind into it.

I say blind because that is what you’re doing when you are just singing without any context to it. Of course, when you are covering songs that’s a whole different practice altogether, and composing songs requires you to start with a blank canvas and is not the same thing as practicing.

But practice is when you are trying to do something that you can’t do yet, so if you can already sing a song you singing that song over and over again isn’t technically practice. As I said above there might be marginal gains but there aren’t many.

So how do you achieve deliberate practice?

The quickest way to achieve deliberate practice is through being knowledgeable and being aware of what you need to and how you need to practice.

And the quickest way to do this is through online courses without losing time, attention, or quality. I do promote certain courses and I am going to link all the courses below at the end of the article.

The reason this is important is that this knowledge and how to perform the techniques that I’m talking about is going to allow you to ground yourself in a perimeter.

Now I understand that artists are very free-minded and they love the freedom they get when they know a craft. But in order to be able to create indefinite amounts of music one must learn how to speak it first.

The same is true when you learning a language. You may learn the grammar, you may learn the vocabulary but once you do what you can do is create an unlimited amount of sentences with them.

That is what you can do when you master your music techniques and you deliberately set to practice.

You Can’t Reach a Destination Like This

Another reason why this is important is that deliberate practice gives you an end goal to look forward to so this allows you to understand that there is something you are working towards; unlike just singing by yourself there is no actual goal.

And when you don’t have a destination you actually don’t reach anywhere and that while maybe adventurous is not very effective when you are just trying to become better.

However, there is a time and place for such things when you are good enough and you think you have reached a point where you may not need to practice anymore even if you want to take a break from practice then it is almost better than you wander off and compose something.

But if that is not the case and you are wondering how to reach a good level of singing so that you can have that freedom where you can compose as freely and you’re able to do anything that you want to do then I suggest that you look at the resources provided at the end of this article.

Another reason I recommend online courses is because there is a vast majority of knowledge out there, especially on YouTube and other places on the internet, and not really put into a curriculum or in a particular order that will take you from the beginning level to the pro level.

Buying an Online Course

Buying an online course is going to be the best investment you are going to make for yourself when it comes to learning how to sing.

This is definitely the way to go and you can read more about it here.

But, to kill the suspense, ‘The Four Pillars of Singing’ is the way to go and you should definitely check it out for yourself and consider this as one of the best courses you can buy for singing and wouldn’t need another one either.

There are other courses, there is this warm-up course that you can invest in but it’ll only teach you how to warm up. But there are a lot of other courses that you can learn from. Here’s the list.

But, try to have at least one of them to rely on and you will see saying the same thing in the article that I’ve mentioned above.

Whatever you do, don’t forget to practice hard so that you can become a better singer!
