How are Singing and Speaking Similar?

There isn’t a lot to say about this but I believe it is these small understanding we have about how things work that allows us to practice better.

Singing and speaking are only similar in the sense that they are both used to convey an idea or an expression and that they use sounds as a way to achieve this. Beyond this, their similarities end and singing becomes a far more active choice of learning to achieve a decent level of skill than compared to speech which is taught to us as children.

But, let us not just keep things like that, let us continue to understand a little bit more about it in depth.

They Both Use Vocals Cords

Both singing and speaking use vocals to communicate.

Which is how we understand and talk to each other. We convey how we feel and what we want to say and explain ideas through this amazing muscle.

And just like their function, we understand all of these things because they both use sounds. Without this, we wouldn’t be able to understand either one of them.

But, that’s kind of it. That is where the similarities tend to end.

Why It’s Not Music

The reason you don’t consider speaking as music is that it is not put in order. There is a certain type of order when you are speaking but it is not the structures you find in music.

In music, there is a structured rhythm, even when it is broken and then there is a certain sense of harmony that is also very carefully put together. But to give you a straight answer.

It’s not music because music is sounds put in an order.

Technique Used

The other difference between singing and speaking is the technique used. To say that they are different is an understatement.

Technique is how you make a sound in music.

When you speak, you can probably do it whenever you want to and however, you want to. Lying down, standing up, and even when you are eating something.

The same is not true for singing.

That is why singing is slightly harder to master than speech. It requires pacific techniques to get specific results.

To the point that is little to no one saying that one ought to practice their talking. The most you’ll hear people saying is to mind your own words but that’s it.

The same is not the case for singing.

So, obviously, between the two singing is far technique intensive and you need to be far more mindful of it when you are practicing. Because if you can’t get the techniques right, you will not be able to sound good while singing.

Therein lies another truth. Singing is purposefully done unlike speaking. It is not an innate gift. It needs to be practiced and it needs to be understood for you to be good at it.

One Doesn’t Affect The Other

So that is how it is.

One doesn’t affect the other.

If you know how to speak it doesn’t guarantee that you know how to sing since their techniques are so far from each other.

So when you are worrying if one might affect the other, it doesn’t.

It is when you are aware of such subtle nuances that you are made aware of how things actually work that you are able to practice and move forward with a positive and correct mindset about not just singing but learning as a whole as well.

If you plan to pursue singing more effectively then having these kinds of truths embedded in you is going to prove very useful in the long run as you pursue your craft.
