How to Start Singing With no Experience

I really like talking about this. How does one begin? Where do we begin? All these burning questions lead us to start something new, something exciting.

To start singing with no prior experience you have to dive in with learning and simultaneously share it with other musicians. There are multiple ways to share and learn but the quickest way to get started is through an online course.

It’s true. An online course has no barrier to entry and will allow you to start singing with no prior experience. But, of course, there are other things you must do as well.

Drown Yourself Into Singing

If you are serious about getting to learn how to sing. Learn what and how it’s done. Take your favorite snack and sit in front of YouTube and start watching videos on singing is done.

I do this for anything new that I learn. Just drown yourself in it. Turn it into entertainment. Literally. I love wildlife and I love watching documentaries regarding that. This idea of turning what you want to learn into entertainment comes from that.

Then it was reinforced by the book called Atomic Habits written by James Clear. In this book, James talks about how to make a habit easier to adapt and one of the steps is to make it easier.

Turning what you want to learn into entertainment and viewing it as such allows you to learn whatever you want, initially, it works amazingly to gather knowledge.

So, even without any prior experience, you can start to dive and hopefully drown yourself in singing.

Next Practical Steps

Obviously, we can’t stay in the state of knowledge gather and entertaining ourselves all the time.

So the next few practical steps are as follows.

  1. Online Courses: I wrote an article about this, explaining why online courses are better and why they’re there to stay. They are going to teach you kind of everything that you have to know in order to become a better singer. Here is a link to a course, I own a copy myself, you should definitely try it out. Using my link is going to help me out at no extra cost to you!
  2. Music Theory: Music theory allows you to understand how we understand music. This is extremely important because otherwise, you’re just singing without knowing what or why. You don’t want to be the singer which says “I can only sing in B minor”. Nobody wants to hear that and you shouldn’t give a reason.
  3. Record Yourself: If you’ve recorded yourself singing, do it. Do it for yourself and see where it goes. If you’re even mildly happy, post it online on your Instagram and ask people to give feedback. Then ignore the feedback. The purpose is to get you started rather than never doing it. It will force you to think a bit about social media terms as that is the currency we are dealing with now.
  4. Find a Band: Find a band that is equal to your level. Being in a band is going to force you to practice certain songs and be on your toes to lead it with vocals. It’s fine if you have no experience and you can be honest about it but you have to at least put up good faith. That you’ll at least try your best at all times to sound your best.
  5. Form a Band: If there are none in your area then I suggest you form a band. Look for people around you who might be interested in learning to pick up their respective instruments. You can all grow together and it gives you the advantage to set the terms for yourself and others.
  6. Post on Social Media: If you don’t do this then you are missing out. All throughout this blog, you will find me harking that social media is the currency of the new world. It’s true. It’s everywhere and the only way to get yourself out there is to be able to make good musical content. The more you do it the better you are going to get.

How Exposure Helps

If you have no singing experience then the best way to get it is by doing one of the things above. It’s going to start to give you exposure, a real-life kind of exposure.

Even posting online is exposure by itself. You have to do it and you have to learn how to have fun with that. The same goes for hanging out with other musicians. You’d be surprised (if you’ve never done this before) how it can change you.

I changed when I was at Berklee and realized that I hated being in a band. I thought being in the band always seemed cool to me and when I was finally in an ensemble class. I realized, like glass breaking in silence. I hated this. I hated the overtness of it.

I loved the opposite. Being alone and composing and then showing that composition to my teachers and my friends. I was very comfortable with that kind of music writing in my life.

Things like these allow you to experience and nail down what exactly you want and how you want to do things. Never shy away from opportunities! Say yes and do them. These things can always come in handy and allow you to do the same.

Try Saying Yes To This

Buy an online course. Regardless if you’re planning to be a professional singer or you’re a hobbyist. It’s going to help you become better. I have written a whole article on why you should buy an online course here.

I have given my recommendation of which online course I personally have and which you ought to go for, with various other courses that are equally effective but for other things. You can read it here and make the choice for yourself. Prices are told as well.

Have fun and get some experience!
