Singing should feel the way you’ve envisioned yourself to feel when you sing. Strong and powerful and your story is being heard across the galaxy.
At different stages of your practice singing will feel different. Before practice it’s going to be hard, during practice will be a struggle and after practice, it will feel like second nature. These phases are important for you to go through in order to become good at singing.
Understanding it is not just enough. I hope you read this article and actually take action toward your singing goals. At the end of the article are more resources for you to follow. For now, let’s read on.
Before Practice
Before practice, your singing should sound like hell.
Or it should be hell for you because you are not able to do anything at all and that is normal because when you are first starting out there is nothing really that you can do but improve.
Remember, this is before practice.
The best analogy I can give is when you are learning a new language there is nothing really much to do other than mumble the new words you’ve learned.
You may try to speak or words may try to come out of your mouth but you can’t speak that language so the ability for you to express yourself in that language will be very far from being able to be understood.
Remember, this is before practice.
In music or in singing it will translate into you not being able to sing the notes that you ought to be able to sing.
That is going to cause a lot of frustration but don’t worry that is how singing before practice ought to sound like.
During Practice
During practice, you should feel like the things that you’re practicing or just difficult enough for you to not be able to sing but easy enough for you to believe that you can bridge the gap between the two.
It’s a weird feeling.
It is having the understanding that you are not able to do it yet but you know exactly what you need to do to achieve it and how as well. Both how and what are important aspects in the practice phase.
It’s like before you hit the ‘start’ on Google Maps you know where you are and you have the end destination put in the maps. You might not know the way yet but as soon as Google tells you that it’s 20 minutes away and gives you the exact directions, you have this sense of confidence that will be able to reach that
Practicing feels like that.
Another important thing that I would like to say is online courses allows you to have the functionality of Google Maps gives to you but for your singing. More of this is at the end of this article.
After Practice
Now after practice is where all of the fun is.
Now you have gone through the motions of practicing and have understood how everything works. From now on, whatever it is that you’ve been practicing will feel and come to you naturally.
Also, the amount of effort that you were putting in to get the same results that you were before, will be considerably less.
If you feel like you are not putting much less effort than before and you understand how the technique is working but it is not completely fluent yet I suggest that you keep on practicing.
Because if you keep on practicing anything that you are doing will become more fluent and feel more natural to you. And you definitely want to make that skill reach a point where you are able to do it without thinking twice about it
It should be almost like second nature to you.
Showtime
At showtime, everything that you practice should flow.
Music should flow out of you.
You don’t have to remember anything because you’ve practiced so much to the point that it has become such a big part of you that you can do it without even thinking about it.
If you are wondering if it is possible, it 100% is.
Because it has happened to me, where I was just able to sing the thing that I had been practicing over and over again almost fluently in without giving it a second thought.
The reason it should flow during showtime is that everything that there was to practice you’ve already practiced.
There is no need for you to go back to it again.
Now is the time to work on your show presence and give the crowd a really good show. Flaunt how much you’ve practiced so that they fall in love with not just your band but your voice as well.
Now singing should feel effortless.
Online Courses
But for you to get there there is a route I know that you can take that will make it easier for you to reach a level where singing is effortless.
It is to learn from online courses, I am a big fan of online courses and own over 40 courses from across various disciplines. You ought to try to understand why and how you can benefit from them by reading this article here.
One of the best courses I have in my library is by Robert Lunte and specifically his ‘The Four Pillars of Singing’, you should really take a look at it.
If you’d something a far more budget-friendly course just to get an idea of his teaching then I would ask you to check out the warm-up course.
If you’d like to see all of the courses on offer then you can check them out here.
Take your time but have at least one course in your library so you can fall on it whenever you think you’ve mastered something and are ready to take on the next exercise.
